Taking it to the mountains
Over the past few months, I have focused mainly on maternity and newborn sessions. Though it is easy to fall into the same routine with locations, and poses, I wanted to take this recent one outside my usual comfort zone. I visited a beautiful overlook in the Blue Ridge Mountains. From the image, you would think this session was a walk in the park. But like any photographer, or business owner, there is always a learning curve. I met with the couple and their young daughter at a cute visitor center to take a few snaps among some fields of wildflowers and old log cabins. Upon taking my first 4 photos, my SD card failed. And you guessed it, I did not have a back up SD card. Due to other recent hiccups, I luckily brought a back up camera. But it is always a photographers nightmare to have anything go wrong with equipment, or technical issues during any session, but especially a session that is in the mountains that my client and myself drove a good distance to get to. My back up camera is still a great camera, but it had been a while since I've used it so of course I was nervous that my images would not come out the same! Not only that, I was outside my comfort zone as I was in an entirely new location, where lighting and setting is unfamiliar.
I took a deep breath and focused on my settings, the lighting, and the moment. To my surprise, when the session was over and I looked over my images that evening, I was relieved to find that they not only came out beautiful, but the bokeh, and vignette of my images were just perfect! Although I love my go-to mirrorless camera, there is something special about DSLR cameras too, they provide a whole new vibe and feel!
Lesson learned as a photographer, always have a back up of EVERYTHING. Even when you think nothing could go wrong during a session, even a mini session, know that anything is possible. Always have a back-up battery, camera, SD card, or even a flash. I have learned a hard lesson with all of these! In the end, my clients have been so wonderful and understanding and the finished product was exactly what I hoped for.
